Porcelain terraces, courtyards & driveways in Knutsford & Mobberley.

From the Italianate villas of Legh Road to family homes in Bexton and farmhouses out in Mobberley, Knutsford gardens tend to be large, level and seen by a lot of people. We build wide terraces, walled courtyards that drain, and long gravel or block drives that still look neat after ten winters.

01 · TERRACES FOR KNUTSFORD’S GRAND HOUSES

Legh Road villas deserve a terrace with real presence.

The houses Richard Harding Watt built along Legh Road in the early 1900s, with their towers, terracotta and Italian touches, are some of the most unusual in Cheshire. His Gaskell Memorial Tower on King Street is the same story. A small square of grey slabs looks lost next to them.

For these homes we usually suggest either large-format Italian porcelain in warm stone tones, which needs almost no upkeep, or sawn English sandstone, which weathers in gently and sits comfortably beside old brick and render. Both are laid on our full 214mm build-up with a polymer bonding coat under every slab.

On terraces this size, levels matter. David sets out the falls with a rotary laser so a 70 m² terrace sheds rain into hidden drains without you ever noticing the slope.

02 · COURTYARDS THAT DO NOT FLOOD

A walled courtyard has nowhere for rain to go, so we give it somewhere.

Much of Knutsford sits on sandy, gravelly ground left behind by the glaciers, which drains well, but there are pockets of heavy clay towards Mobberley and low, wet ground near Tatton Mere and the Moor. Older town houses and Bexton’s walled gardens often trap water against the house. This is how we solve it.

  1. Find the lowest safe point

David maps the levels and the damp-proof course (the waterproof line in your brickwork). The paving must finish at least 150mm below it, or meet the doors with a channel drain.

  2. Fall away from the house

Every square metre slopes gently, about 1 in 80, towards a drain rather than the back door.

  3. Slot drains you barely see

A narrow stainless slot sits flush in the joints, so the courtyard looks like plain stone.

  4. Gullies that can be cleared

Each run ends in a gully with a removable grid, so leaves can be lifted out in seconds.

  5. Take the water away

Into an existing surface-water drain where there is one, or a crate soakaway sized after a percolation test (how fast your ground absorbs water).

  6. Test before we lay

We run a hose through the whole system before a single slab goes down.

04 · HOW WE RUN A KNUTSFORD JOB

Further from the yard, but never a stop-start job.

Travel, in plain terms Knutsford and Mobberley are about 30 to 35 minutes from Hazel Grove. On jobs over £5,000 there is no travel charge at all. On smaller jobs a flat travel charge appears as its own line on your quote, so you can see it before you agree to anything.
We stay until it is finished Once we start your terrace or drive, David and Callum are on it every working day until the walk-round sign-off. We do not leave it half-dug to fit in a job closer to home, and deliveries are booked so a lorry never blocks a narrow lane like Town Lane at school time.
