Cheadle Hulme & Cheadle (SK8) · 10 minutes from our yard

Family patios, block driveways & turfing in Cheadle Hulme & Cheadle.

Most SK8 homes we visit are 1930s to 1960s semis and detached houses with a cracked concrete drive at the front and a muddy clay lawn at the back. We turn both into something you can use every day: a clean two-car drive and a level porcelain patio, built by David and Callum with no subcontractors.

01 · WHAT WE USUALLY FIND IN SK8

From a squelchy lawn and a cracked drive to a home that looks after itself.

Cheadle Hulme is flat, which sounds easy, but flat ground on heavy clay has nowhere for rainwater to go. That is why so many back lawns here stay wet from October to April.

Before: the typical 1950s SK8 garden

  • ✗A 1960s concrete drive, cracked by frost and the roots of a street tree, with weeds in every joint.
  • ✗Only room for one car, so the second one sits on the road.
  • ✗A back lawn that holds puddles for days because the clay underneath does not drain.
  • ✗A small slabbed area by the back door, laid on sand, now rocking and green with moss.

After: what we build instead

  • ✓The old concrete broken out and taken away by licensed grab lorry, then a 310mm deep driveway base.
  • ✓Two cars side by side on permeable blocks, so rain soaks through rather than running into the road.
  • ✓A level porcelain patio with a channel drain by the back door, set below your damp-proof course.
  • ✓New turf on fresh sandy topsoil, with land drains where the lawn was worst.

04 · STREET BY STREET

The SK8 roads we know well, and what their gardens need.

  • Swann LaneLong 1930s semis and detached houses with deep front gardens. Plenty of room for a two or three-car drive once the old lawn and hedge come out.
  • The Bramhall Lane South borderWhere Cheadle Hulme meets Bramhall, the houses get larger and the back gardens longer. Patios of 40 m² and more are common here.
  • Ravenoak Road & Grove Lane1950s and 1960s semis, many with their original concrete drives now cracked. A straight swap to permeable block is the usual job.
  • Station RoadEdwardian and inter-war homes close to the village. Narrower side passages, so we bring the tracked barrow rather than the digger.
  • Turves Road & Heald Green sidePost-war family homes with flat, heavy clay back gardens. Land drains under a new lawn make the biggest difference.
  • Schools Hill & Cheadle villageOlder terraces and Victorian semis near the high street. Smaller courtyards where a bistro-sized porcelain patio fits well.
05 · QUESTIONS SK8 HOMEOWNERS ASK

Straight answers for Cheadle Hulme & Cheadle.

We want a wider drive. Do we need a new dropped kerb?+
If your new drive is wider than the existing dropped kerb, yes. Stockport Council handles the application and its approved contractor lowers the kerb on the pavement. We build the drive inside your boundary and line the levels up with their kerb, and we will tell you at the survey whether you need to apply.
Our semi shares a narrow side passage. Can you still get in?+
Usually. Our micro-digger narrows to 710mm, and where a shared passage is tighter than that we use a tracked power barrow instead. We lay boards down the passage and agree working times with your neighbour before we start.
Water collects by our back door after rain. Will a new patio stop it?+
Yes, if it is built right. We set the patio at least 150mm below your damp-proof course (the waterproof line in your brickwork) and slope it away from the house. Where you want the patio level with the doors, we fit a channel drain across the threshold instead.
How long will we be without the drive?+
A two-car drive is normally four to five working days. We tell you which day the old surface comes out so you can park on the road, and you can drive on blocks the day we finish. Resin needs 24 hours to set before cars go on it.
