Patios, driveways & landscaping in Bramhall & Woodford (SK7).

Bramhall’s big 1930s plots around Bramhall Park and Pownall Park sit on heavy, wet boulder clay. We fix the waterlogging first, then lay the 60 m²-plus porcelain terraces those long back gardens deserve.

01 · WHAT’S UNDER A BRAMHALL GARDEN

Big plots, slow-draining clay and a brook through the middle.

Most of the gardens we dig in SK7 behave the same way: a spade’s depth of decent topsoil, then sticky grey-brown clay that holds water from October to April. Here is what that means for your patio or drive.

Housing1930s detached & semisDeep back gardens of 25–40 metres, often with an old concrete path and a tired 1980s patio by the back door.
SoilHeavy boulder clayLeft behind by the last Ice Age. It swells when wet and cracks in dry summers, so shallow patios move.
WaterLady Brook catchmentGardens that fall towards the brook and Bramhall Park stay soggy for days after rain. We test before we promise a soakaway.
Typical size50–70 m² terracesAbout 10 m × 6 m: the full width of a detached house and six long strides out from the back door.
CouncilStockport CouncilBack-garden patios need no permission. Front drives follow the permeable-paving rules; dropped kerbs need council approval.
02 · STREET BY STREET

The parts of Bramhall & Woodford we know by heart.

  • Pownall ParkWide 1930s detached homes with long lawns. Owners usually want a two-level terrace off new bifolds, plus raised oak beds to hide the change in level.
  • Bramhall Park & Bramhall Park RoadGardens slope gently towards the park and the brook. Lawns here are the wettest we see in SK7, so land drains often come before the patio.
  • Carr Wood areaMature trees and big hedges mean root checks at survey and careful hand-digging near trunks. Shade suits porcelain, which does not go green like sandstone.
  • Bramhall Lane SouthBusy road, so we plan deliveries before 8am and keep pallets on your drive, never the pavement. Lots of front-garden drive conversions here.
  • Ladythorn & Dairyground1950s–1960s semis with medium gardens. A 30–35 m² family patio and a tidy lawn edge is the most common job.
  • Woodford & New WoodfordOlder cottages along Woodford Road, and newer homes on the old aerodrome site where builders’ topsoil is thin over rubble and clay. We dig it out and start again.

05 · QUESTIONS BRAMHALL OWNERS ASK

Straight answers before you ring.

Our lawn near Bramhall Park stays wet all winter. Will a patio make it worse?+
It can, if the patio simply sheds water onto the lawn. We fall every terrace (1:80, about 1cm per metre) towards a channel or French drain that takes the water somewhere useful. If the clay fails our soak test, we will not fit a soakaway that cannot work; we connect to your existing surface-water drain instead.
Our 1930s house has a low damp-proof course. Can we still have a level step-out from new bifolds?+
Yes. The normal rule is that paving sits 150mm below the damp-proof course (the waterproof layer in your brickwork). For a level threshold we fit a slot drain right against the door frame, so rain is caught before it can reach the wall. David checks your levels with a laser at the survey.
Where do the clay and deliveries go on a busy road like Bramhall Lane South?+
Stone arrives early on a crane lorry and sits on your drive on boards. Dug-out clay goes straight into a licensed grab lorry, usually two or three loads for a 60 m² terrace, so there is no skip sitting outside for a fortnight.
How long does a 60 m² Bramhall terrace take?+
Usually 7 to 9 working days for the two of us: two days digging and drainage, one day of stone base and compaction, and four to five days laying and pointing. Add a day or two if we are putting land drains across the lawn as well.
